PrEP and PEP

HIV prevention is a critical aspect of public health, and Bliss Health is at the forefront of providing innovative and effective solutions. Two of the most important strategies for preventing HIV infection are PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis). This article explores what PrEP and PEP are, how they work, and how Bliss Health can support you in accessing these life-saving treatments.

What is PrEP, and how does it work?

PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a preventive strategy for individuals who are at high risk of contracting HIV. PrEP involves taking a daily medication that significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection if exposed to the virus. The medication commonly used for PrEP is a combination of tenofovir and emtricitabine, which works by preventing the virus from establishing a permanent infection.

PrEP involves taking a daily oral medication or bi-monthly injection, both of which significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection if exposed to the virus. The medication commonly used for oral PrEP is a combination of Tenofovir and Emtricitabine, while the PREP injection that is every two months uses Cabotegravir; both these medications work by preventing the virus from establishing a permanent infection in the body.

PrEP works by maintaining a consistent level of medication in the bloodstream. This medication interferes with the HIV’s ability to replicate within the body, thus preventing it from establishing an infection. When taken daily as prescribed, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 99%.

PrEP and PEP

PrEP is recommended for individuals who are at high risk of HIV exposure, including:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM)
  • Heterosexual individuals with an HIV-positive partner
  • People who inject drugs
  • Individuals with multiple sexual partners
  • Those who engage in unprotected sex

What is PEP, and how does it work?

PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, is an emergency treatment for individuals who may have been exposed to HIV. PEP involves taking a combination of antiretroviral medications within 72 hours of potential exposure to the virus. This treatment is designed to prevent the virus from taking hold and causing an infection.

PEP works by attacking the virus at multiple stages of its life cycle. The combination of medications used in PEP helps to prevent the virus from replicating and spreading within the body. To be effective, PEP must be started as soon as possible after exposure and taken consistently for 28 days. PEP is recommended for individuals who believe they have been exposed to HIV through:

  • Unprotected sexual intercourse
  • Needle sharing or other forms of injection drug use
  • Accidental exposure in healthcare settings
  • Sexual assault
